NPR : Why the Rest of the World Plays Soccer: "Talk of the Nation, April 5, 2005
"Two economists examine this question in National Pastime: How Americans Play Baseball and the Rest of the World Plays Soccer. Culture and history have a role to play, the authors argue, but some of the most important explanations for how these sports have evolved are economic."
I haven't yet read this book, but have it on order from Amazon and will return here for comments. Interesting that there are more Americans playing soccer than any other sport, not just in America, but compared with every other country in the world. That is, what is the most popular sport in terms of national play? Because of recreational play and both boys and girls and men and women playing, the answer is Americans playing soccer. Thus, the title of the book might be altered to: Why the Traditional Media and Sport Establishment in America Are Blind to the Reality of Soccer in America.
